Hydrogen Society - Plan your own HydroCity
Topic Description and Motivation
Hydrogen will be one of the main energy carriers in a decarbonized, sustainable future. Worldwide, more and more countries are striving to evolve towards a so-called hydrogen society: A society with low-cost and zero-emission production of hydrogen, a distribution infrastructure, and applications in the industrial, mobility, heating, and power sectors. The transition to a hydrogen-based energy system will be a herculean journey affecting all dimensions of our society. To comprehend this societal transformation interdisciplinary, technical, social, ecological, and political engineering will be required. Learn about the challenges and promises of a hydrogen-based economy by participating in interactive workshops, real-world case studies and lectures by high-profile speakers. Within two weeks you will design your own sustainable Hydro-City and present your concept to local experts.
Preliminary Program
Time period: 13.09.-24.09.2021
Based on the knowledge gained in the Summer School you will plan your own "HydroCity" - a city whose energy supply is based on hydrogen.
Day 1-3: Introduction of the concept "Hydrogen Society".
- Sustainability strategy, life cycle assessment, socio-economic and political issues.
- Development of your first own vision of the "HydroCity".
Day 4-5: Hydrogen production
- Technological developments, economics and emissions of different hydrogen generation methods e.g. electrolysis, steam reforming.
Day 6-7: Application of hydrogen in mobility, industry and at the end user e.g. fuel cell cars, steel production with H2.
Day 8-9: Hydrogen storage and distribution
- Pipelines, tanks, salt caverns
- Integration of a hydrogen strategy into society.
- Social acceptance.
Day 10: Final presentations of the HydroCity concepts to local experts
Format: Block event- online (presence, if possible)
Morning session (9:00 – 12:00) and afternoon session (13:00 – 16:00)
